Everyone watches TV, and most people are influenced by what they see on their televisions. For this reason there are rules for what can and can’t be done on TV, and never before has anyone attempted to smoke an illegal substance such as marijuana on live TV. So what does it say about our society if a well known celebrity can smoke a joint on national TV and get away with it? We have laws for a reason, to keep us out of trouble and make us a functioning society. If a person decides that he disapproves of a law, then he should take the proper steps to change the law, not just outright break the law just because he doesn’t like it. This is precisely what happened in this article when Hangover star Zach Galifianakis lit-up on the political chat show Real Time with Bill Maher.
On the show they were discussing proposition 19 which is a new law being considered in California that would legalize marijuana, when Zach pulled a joint out of his pocket and started smoking it right there in live TV! Apparently he was trying to prove that smoking marijuana doesn’t make you crazy and you can still carry on a normal conversation. He thought that by doing this, he could influence the outcome of the vote. He thought wrong, because he could have just said that smoking pot doesn’t make you crazy or given some statistics or anything to prove his point. He did the wrong thing by just demonstrating his point by breaking the law.
I guess the authorities were just too baffled by the event to put their heads together and say, Hey wait a second isn’t that illegal to take the initiative to do something about it. Whatever the case is I hope that in the near future if this ever happens again that it will not go unpunished. That is if proposition 19 doesn’t pass, because then it would be okay for channel seven news anchor Scott Inman to smoke a joint while giving your local news.
