Is mankind truly evil by nature? The bible says in Jeremiah 17:9 “The heart of men is deceitful above all things and beyond cure. Who can understand it?” But is this really true? It certainly seems that way when we look at the violence that surrounds us. Take for example the recent Al-Qaeda slaughter of 58 Catholic church members in Iraq. The people that fell victim to this crime were innocent. They did nothing to provoke the wrath of the Al-Qaeda, yet they were still murdered for no apparent reason. But, this is not the only evidence of man’s wickedness: we have had similar massacres in America. Just about everyone has heard about the Columbine incident, where two teens gunned down twelve students and one teacher before committing suicide. But it doesn't stop at school shootings. In 2006, Charles Carl Roberts IV abducted ten Amish girls between the ages of ten and thirteen. He took them to his house where he tied them up and shot them. Then, he proceeded to shoot himself. Iraq is not the only country that has a radical militia element. There are radical anti-government militia groups residing America. In 1995, two anti-government crazies set off a huge bomb in Oklahoma that killed 168 people and injured more than 680 people. Men have to be truly evil to shed the blood of their own kind and not lose a wink of sleep over it. Some people might argue that mankind is not evil, and that violence is necessary for the greater good. But violent crimes way outnumber the notions of peace, and I have yet to see the greater good. All you hear about on the news is death and war, and all I see is a race of people who desperately need a Savior to rescue them from their wicked hearts.
